After your braces have done their job and have been removed, there's one last stage in your treatment. This is called "retention".

When your teeth have reached their final position, they need to be kept there for a certain time, otherwise they may return to their original place.

Retainers allow your bones, gums and muscles to adapt to your "new teeth".

It is essential that the retention period is prolonged to ensure maximum stability and for this reason we prefer to used "fixed" titanium retainers on the inside of the teeth.

Fixed retainers are hygienic, invisible to your friends and very well-tolerated. Best of all, you don't have to remember to put them in each night.

Occasionally, a removable retainer may be recommended and your orthodontist will explain how often to wear this.

Whilst in retention, your orthodontist will want to see you once or twice a year for five years or more, to make sure that your teeth remain in the right place.
